Monthly Topic Series: October

It’s October and our monthly topic is…the pumpkin patch! Check out some of our speech, language, and feeding activity recommendations below!

Speech - Give ‘em Pumpkin to Talk About

Take a hollowed out pumpkin from the patch and place target sound pictures or words inside (you can even put them on the back of pictures of seeds. Pick them out one by one and say them as you do. If the word is pronounced correctly, hold on to it. If the word is pronounced incorrectly, put it back. Whoever has the most seeds at the end is the winner.

Language - Seeds, Stems, and Skin, Oh My

As you turn your pumpkins from the patch into jack-o-lanterns, talk about the parts that make the whole (e.g., vine, stem, skin, pulp, seeds, etc.). You can even incorporate learning about the pumpkin’s life cycle, such as in this video.

Feeding - (Pumpkin) Spice Things Up

While pumpkins are common this time of the year, they aren’t what we commonly think of when we hear the word fruit. What makes pumpkins so great is that they are versatile in their flavor profile - they can be made sweet or savory. And just like last month’s apples, using produce you picked yourself adds another element of fun!

  • Pumpkin bread/muffins, pumpkin roll, pumpkin cake/cupcakes/cookies, pumpkin pie, pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin pancakes, pumpkin butter, pumpkin pasta sauce, pumpkin-filled pasta (e.g., ravioli), pumpkin risotto, pumpkin soup, pumpkin juice, pumpkin seeds
